My mother has lived in Kensington since 1961 and we have lived here for 33 years. We have been proactive during these years to improve our neighborhood. The speed was reduced on Van Dyke/Aldine Drive. Graffiti was painted out personally and regularly reported to the city. Litter was removed and a petition walked to have an alley paved. We attend the Kensington/Talmadge meetings when possible.
My question is where all these opponents to the Kensington Terrace project have been for the last two years of planning. Allard Jansen did thorough presentations at the Ken/Tal meetings and provided suggestion forms for the commercial ventures in the proposed project. Kensington was home to a market, a dime store and a hardware store in years past.
Some of the critics I heard at the meetings have lived here only a short time. Some opponents are longtime residents. Where have they been? The opposition surfaced during the final stages.
It is my wish that “both sides of the street” will start to work together productively. Let’s hope that Jansen doesn’t become frustrated with the process and relinquish the property to someone who could care less about working with this community and some of its residents who behave badly during public forums.

Regarding the writer who sees Allard Jansen’s Kensington Park Plaza building as an “eyesore”: I am also a Kensington resident and I must disagree immensely. The Kensington Park Plaza is a beautiful building and without a doubt the most attractive structure in the Kensington Adams Avenue business district. I’m not alone in this assessment , as evidenced by the building’s receipt of an Orchid award for excellence in architectural design.
Jansen’s new Kensington Terrace project will be a very nice addition to our community and will replace an ugly gas station and dilapidated apartment building. My neighbors and I support the project 100 percent, as do most Kensington residents.

It seems there is much misinformation being disseminated with regards to this project. What a shame. It’s a beautiful project that would add value for homeowners in the vicinity and benefit the city of San Diego overall by removing what is now little more than urban blight.
It’s a shame that considerable additional time continues to be burn ed up and monies not well spent when this project could be moving forward instead of sitting in limbo. I understand there is a small contingent that threatens legal action if the City Council does not give them their way . Please force their hand on this and get this project moving forward.
Every dollar wasted in legal efforts, especially funds raised by Kensington Community residents in support of legal action, is a dollar that cannot be spent renovating the library across the street from the proposed Kensington Terrace project. We all know there is only so much money that residents will spend in support of their community. Let’s hope the legal donation fund does not drain funds from a much better cause. Of course , when it comes time for people to pony up funds maybe the real truth will be told.
